The Biography of Syeikh Yusuf Al-Makassariy
The Makassar land gave a great gift by God in 1626 M. The gift took the form of the birth of a boy named Muhammad Yusuf.
Baby of a happy couple Abdullah and Aminah who where born in Gowa, Sulawesi Selatan, on July 3, 1626 M.
Yusuf's name was given by Sultan Alauddin, The King of Gowa who first embraced Islam. The his full name is Syekh Yusuf Abu Mahasin Tajul Khalwati Al-Makassari Al-Bantani.
Syekh Yusuf started receiving religious education in Gowa. Started everything by learning to read Al-Quran. Thaught directly by Daengta Sammeng, shalehah woman and knowledgeable. Syeikh Yusuf studied arabic language, fiqih and the science of syariat, it seems like in the hermitage Bontoala. A boarding school which was founded when I accepted Islam as a royal religion. This cottage has been cared for by Syeikh Sayyid Alwi bin Abdullah Al-Allamah Tahir since 1634 M.
At Wednesday, October 20, 1644, Syeikh Yusuf went from Makassar to Banten to expand his religious knowledge. He crossed the sea on a Portuguese ship to get to Banten. because of the good relation between The Kingdom of Gowa and The Kingdom of Banten, Syekih Yusuf was welcomed in Banten at the time.
Syeikh Yusuf continued his journey demanding his knowledge to Banda Aceh. He arrived in Aceh during the time of Sultan Tajul Alam Safiatuddin Syah, the son of Sultan Iskandar Muda. Syeikh Nuruddin Ar-Ranuri is his teacher in Aceh. To the Ar-Ranuri obedient Syeikh Yusuf not only studied religion but also steeped in state philosophy. Syeikh Nuruddin is the author of a book about the Islamic government system.
feeling thirsty for his knowledge had not been fulfilled, Syeikh Yusuf left from Aceh and go ot Yaman in 1649 to study with Sayyid Abdullah Abdul Baqi bin Al Kabir. Then continue to study with Syeikh Maulana Sayyid Ali. Not only that there Syeikh Yusuf then continued his jouney to Syria.
Soeharto named him a national hero because he wa active in the struggle for Indonesian independence. Syeikh Yusuf never encouraged the students and their followers in Indonesia to realize independence. Be Syeikh Yusuf the famous scholar at the time, just one lecture could ignite the enthuasism of thousands of people to fight the invading army and fly the Indonesian flag with freedom.
Syeikh Yusuf enermous influence on the community alarmed the Dutch colonial army. Consequently, Syeikh Yusuf was exiled in Sri Lanka by the Dutch invaders with the aim of stopping his preaching which greatly endangered the Dutch army.
With the help of Allah even though he was in Sri Lanka Syeikh Yusuf was still able to broadcast da'wah and fight for the independence of his homeland. Syeikh Yusuf used the hajj pilgirms who were transiting in Sri Lanka as a means of preaching but were not known again by the dutch army. The dutch army then moved Syeikh Yusuf's exile in South Africa.
A scolar like Syeikh Yusuf does have emormos influence and charm. cannot be prevented let alone be stopped by anyone without the permission of Allah. In Africa, Syeikh Yusuf continous to carry the way of preaching the glory of his speech and intelligence making his name Aaron in South Africa his mission. In South Africa, it is well received by the people of South Africa, the study and study council which is always filled whith souls who feel they want to be close the their Lord.
The scientics titled "Tuanta Salamaka ri Gowa" closes the age of May 23, 1699, in Cape Town, South Africa. Buried in the Kramat of Syeikh Yusuf Al-Makassari, Cape town, Sulawesi Selatan.
